What would you do for a full ride scholarship?
When a disastrous mistake in class spirals into a heated exchange at a party, college student and part-time barista Anise looks like a suspect in the murder of her friend Cody. Afraid the school will revoke her scholarship if they think she’s a killer, Anise sets out to clear her name. She jumps from one suspect to the next, wearing out the patience of the detective assigned to Cody’s case. Her investigation leads her into a tangled web of love triangles, alcohol poisoning, and even corporate espionage.
Just when Anise thinks she’s cracked the case, her prime suspect, Calvin, saves her from an attack by the real killer. After the death of yet another student, Anise realizes that the killer is only targeting scholarship recipients. Even as students start fleeing campus, Anise refuses to abandon her five year plan so easily. With Calvin now helping her investigate, Anise is in a race to track down the killer before the campus gets shut down for good.

‘Vanilla latte,’ Anise Sedlmayer thought. ‘You’re going to order vanilla because we don’t have pumpkin spice anymore, and you want something that tastes nice. Commit.’
In front of the register, a tiny girl in an oversize wool sweater shifted on her feet as she stared at the menu board.
“Um…I’ll have a medium…hot latte with…”
Anise’s sharpie hovered over the cup, prepared to scrawl a ‘v’ over the flavor box.
“Hazelnut syrup,” the girl said, grimacing. Anise suppressed a sigh. This girl didn’t want hazelnut. She just wanted to be more interesting than vanilla.
“Coming right up,” Anise said.
Anise’s Friday lunch shifts at the campus cafe were hectic. The endless stream of college students desperate for non-dining hall food kept the bell over the door chiming the whole time. Anise handed the girl’s cup to her shift partner today, Gabriella Santana, a fellow freshman with silky black hair and an easy smile. Gabi was willing to man the espresso machine as long as Anise handled the customer service—a trade Anise, with her easily burnt fingertips, was happy to make.
